Kilmarnock reduce losses by half
Kilmarnock have posted a loss of almost £500,000 for the year to 31 May 2010 - down from just under £1m from the previous year.
The figure could have been up to three times worse, but former chairman Jamie Moffat wrote off a debt of £900,000.
Club chairman Michael Johnston said: "The collapse of TV company Setanta is continuing to be felt.
"Added to that, our 11th-place SPL finish and lack of cup success also resulted in a significant loss."
The club's net debt is now £10.5m - down from £11.2m at the end of the last financial year.
Turnover for the year was £6.1m, a drop of £700,000 on the previous year, while players and staff wage costs were £3.6m for the second successive year.
"The low cup income and SPL prize money was off-set to a major extent by the generosity of former chairman Jamie Moffat in writing off £900,000 of his loan account, thus reducing the loss reported in the annual accounts," explained Johnston.
"This magnitude of trading loss cannot be sustained.
"Steps have been taken in the current financial year to reduce the player wage bill - clearly without an adverse impact upon the quality of the first team's performances on the pitch."
The Killie chairman admits new money is needed at the club and he is actively pursuing potential investors.
"New capital requires to be introduced in order to place the club on a healthier financial footing and avoid the prospect of player sales or a further cuts in the first-team squad budget," he said.
"This could be achieved by the purchase of new shares in the company and I am actively discussing this with a number of parties.
"If new investment is forthcoming at an appropriate level, I shall be happy to welcome new directors to the board."
As the current financial climate continues to hit the Scottish game, the Scottish Premier League is carrying out a review of the top flight.
But Johnston, in his statement to shareholders, warned that any possible restructuring of the league to assist the situation could be thwarted by the present voting structure.
"Two key problems must be addressed," Johnston stated.
"The inequitable distribution of the SPL's central revenues, which sees the teams finishing first and second receive 32% of the total, and the ridiculous requirement for an 11:1 majority in favour of any major rule change.
"Lack of flexibility in these points might result in the existing format remaining in place."
On the pitch, any savings may be softened by the performances of the team under new manager Mixu Paatelainen, who took over in the summer.
His "passing game" philosophy has started to bear fruit, with the Rugby Park men now up to sixth in the SPL table.
"Mixu has approached the job with great energy and commitment and this has been rewarded with a promising start to the season," stressed Johnston.
"A great run of three consecutive 3-0 victories, two of them away from home, combined with a growing admiration for his tactical approach and training regime, are testament to his work ethic."

Kilmarnock are poised to sign Swedish defender Billy Berntsson on a free transfer.
The 26-year-old is a free agent as his contract with Swedish second division side Sundsvall expired in October.
The right-back has been on trial at Killie and is close to agreeing a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Scottish Premier League outfit after impressing manager Mixu Paatelainen.
"This is what I have worked for - to get a move to Europe," Berntsson told the Daily Record.
