AFL powerbroker Gillon McLachlan this season knocked back a dream job with English Premier League club Liverpool.

In a sign of his growing reputation as a sports administrator, Liverpool offered him the prime chief executive's role.

A JOURNALIST that wrote a story alleging drunk Liverpool fans abused victims and police during the Hillsborough disaster said he was “aghast” when he saw the headline.

Reporter Harry Arnold said his story, which featured in The Sun had been written in a “fair and balanced way” and the controversial claims had been “allegations”.

He said it was editor Kelvin MacKenzie who wrote the headline “The Truth”.

Official papers will be released on Wednesday, 23 years after the disaster.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to receive help from 'technical committee’
Liverpool are to announce the creation of a “technical committee” of “football people” in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the transfer deadline day debacle that led to the club allowing Andy Carroll to go out on loan without a replacement striker being signed.

Liverpool are being linked with a move for Austrian international Martin Harnik, who has scored 34 goals in two seasons for VFB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.

"It is going to be a very emotional day," said the United manager.

United criticised a section of their supporters who took part in anti-Liverpool taunts during Saturday's fixture against Wigan.

The chants at Old Trafford, which included the words "it's never your fault, always the victims", were first sung in the immediate aftermath of the Luis Suarez-Patrice Evra racism incident.

And the Manchester United Supporters' Trust rejected suggestions the chants were referencing Hillsborough.

But Ferguson added: "I didn't hear it [on Saturday], but others did, particularly in the directors' box. [Chief executive] David Gill was disappointed.

"It is a new chant that only started after the Suarez situation.

"I was disappointed to hear it. It is a minority. But in society there is a minority wanting to be heard."

The recent Hillsborough report cleared Liverpool fans of blame for the deaths of 96 supporters during an FA Cup semi-final tie between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in April 1989.

The 70-year-old Scot added: "We understand what those families must have felt when they got that report."
