1:0 gegen Madrid gewonnen.

Chukwueze in bisher allen Testspielen sehr stark.

Luca Diddi, former match analyst of Hellas Verona, spoke on Carlo Pellegatti's YouTube channel about the Real Madrid game and how Milan is preparing the groundwork for the integration of Leao. Here my translated transkription:
About the Real Madrid Match:
In my analysis of Milan's performance against Real Madrid, I observed significant tactical adjustments tailored to the opponent. Let’s start with the build-up phase. Milan employed a 2-4 formation during the build-up, utilizing two central defenders, the full-backs Calabria and Terracciano, and two central midfielders, Bennacer and Loftus-Cheek, with Loftus-Cheek tried in a central midfield position. This formation allowed Milan to have multiple passing lanes open during the build-up phase.
In this setup, the attacking midfielder, Liberali, shifted to the center-right, while Saelemaekers moved inside, leaving Nasti as the lone forward. This arrangement opened up numerous passing options, enabling Milan to effectively transition into the offensive third of Real Madrid's half. This strategy worked repeatedly throughout the match.
An interesting moment occurred during the first 30 minutes when Carlo Ancelotti instructed Rüdiger to step out and mark Liberali to disrupt Milan’s possession. This tactical tweak aimed to pull one of Real Madrid's central defenders out of position, creating a one-on-one scenario between Nasti and the remaining central defender. This approach was a fresh tactical maneuver that we hadn’t seen under Pioli, where the attacking midfielder stayed closer to the forward.
Under Fonseca, the attacking midfielder, typically Liberali, moved to the center-right, allowing Calabria to provide width. Chuckwueze, meanwhile, moved closer to the striker, essentially forming a second forward. This inversion allowed Milan to maintain open passing lanes, with direct routes from the goalkeeper or defenders to Liberali or Saelemaekers.
Milan's build-up play under Fonseca, characterized by this 2-4 formation, differed from their approach against Manchester City, which employed a 3-2 structure. This shift reflects an evolution in Fonseca’s tactics, likely influenced by both the opponent and Milan’s strategy. Milan seems to be gearing up for a system that maximizes the strengths of players like Leao and Pulisic.
About Leaos new role in Fonsecas new Milan:
Traditionally, Fonseca prefers to play with two wide forwards or wingers who cut inside and operate as attacking midfielders. However, Leao and Chuckwueze don’t fit this mold exactly. Consequently, Milan has devised an alternative approach for Leao's position during the initial build-up phase.
Milan’s build-up involved a 2-4 formation, with players like Liberali, Pulisic, or Loftus-Cheek playing as the attacking midfielder, shifting to the center-right like a mezzala. The width was provided by the right-back, while the attacking midfielder occupied a position between the winger and the traditional attacking midfielder role.
In the second half, Saelemaekers, who initially played the Leao role, shifted to a linking position taken over by Nasti, with Saelemaekers and Chuckwueze moving forward as two strikers. This strategic shift mirrors what Morata often did in Spain, acting as a connector between the midfield and attack. This insight explains why Milan pursued a player capable of fulfilling this role, allowing Leao to operate as a forward, with Chuckwueze also playing upfront.
Hypothetically, if Milan were to implement this system with Leao, he wouldn’t play between the lines during the initial build-up. Instead, he would operate as a forward with someone like Morata acting as the link between the midfield and attack. This setup would allow Milan to have two forwards engaging in one-on-one situations, breaking the first line of pressure and creating numerical superiority in the final third.
Fonseca’s system might aim to give Leao more freedom, particularly during the build-up phase, and less of a static wide role. In the initial build-up, players like Morata, Liberali, and Pulisic would serve as connectors, while Leao and Chuckwueze push forward as attackers. This tactic would allow Milan to exploit one-on-one situations effectively. When the first pressure is broken and Milan finds the passing lane to Morata or the opposite attacking midfielder, Leao could find himself isolated in one-on-one scenarios against a full-back or central defender.
Moreover, if Morata drops deep to link play, he could drag a central defender out of position, leaving Leao in a favorable one-on-one situation against an opposing defender. This isolation would maximize Leao’s offensive potential, giving him the opportunity to consistently engage in one-on-one duels. If Milan can break the initial pressure effectively, they would find themselves in advantageous positions, providing both numerical superiority and optimal conditions for their key attackers.
This system not only would stimulate Leao by providing varied tactical roles but also would prevent him from a monotonous career trajectory, ensuring his continued growth and effectiveness as a top-tier player.
On how to maintain balance with Leao:
It's clear that players like Saelemaekers and Chuckwueze are showing great aptitude in the non-possession phase, becoming increasingly important to the team. Chuckwueze, in particular, has been impactful, providing two assists against Manchester City and scoring the decisive goal against Real Madrid. His early threat in the match, along with his consistent defensive contributions, mirrors the efforts of Saelemaekers.
With Saelemaekers in the lineup, Milan can afford to play Pulisic as a central attacking midfielder, with Chuckwueze on the wing and a single forward up front. Saelemaekers offers significant balance to the team. However, Leao's role in the non-possession phase needs careful consideration, as Milan has found a crucial equilibrium in their recent games.
It’s even thinkable that Milan could deploy Leao as an attacking midfielder behind the striker, with Saelemaekers on the left and Chuckwueze or Pulisic on the right. This configuration, with Leao in the attacking midfield role, constantly exchanging position with Morata, creating havoc amongst opponent defenses, and two wingers, could maintain the team's balance. Milan has numerous options, preparing the ground for their star player, Leao. They will experiment with different setups, and this might cool interest in players like Samardžić, given the existing alternatives such as Pulisic, Leao and Loftus-Cheek.
Patience is key as Fonseca evaluates all players and combinations. Liberali is also a noteworthy mention – despite being just 17, he has shown promise and could see more playtime. Comparisons with Yamal highlight his potential, suggesting he might contribute significantly despite his youth.
Milan's ongoing adjustments are grounded in a strong defensive foundation. The team consistently maintains four to six players behind the ball, making it difficult for opponents to catch them out of position or in one-on-one situations. This defensive solidity is a crucial aspect of their strategy and will continue to underpin their tactical evolution.
About how the midfield is shaping up:
One notable point is the resurgence of Tomori, who has become more reactive, regardless of the tactical setup. Milan's defense managed to keep a clean sheet, thanks in part to the successful one-on-one duels by the defenders.
Bennacer also performed well, and I was particularly impressed by Loftus-Cheek in his new role. He is like a student learning the ropes right now, so we need to be patient with him. If he adapts to that position, I believe he could excel due to his physicality, which Milan has lacked since the departures of Kessie and Tonali.
Additionally, we must not forget the impending arrival of Tijani Reijnders, who will be crucial for Milan. His role and utilization by Fonseca remain to be seen, but it is clear from Fonseca’s statements that he desires to dominate the game through possession. Fonseca is patient in the build-up and focused on maintaining control of the game.
All these are positive notes I’ve observed, starting with Milan's solid defensive balance.
